Previously, Russian rulers diligently tried to interfere in the lives and lives of their subjects. Sometimes it got to the point that imperial decree regulated how people should dress even in the most remote corners of the state, Kommersant reports.

In 1697, Peter I made officials wear rich clothes. At the same time, reports began to appear on colleagues in the civil service. According to the “Rich Dress”, they sometimes revealed those who were not clean at hand. Instead of nice clothes, people were advised to buy armor and weapons.

“To always be ready for the service of Our Great Sovereign and to be necessary for battles with the enemy”, explained Peter I.

Besides the fact that foreign clothes have been brought to Russia, the head of state has now indicated what kind of underwear people should wear. The list of people forced to follow the new fashion began with the boyars and ended with the merchants, growing longer over the years. You even had to pay a fine for wearing Russian clothes.
