Ryabkov: the probability of a nuclear conflict is higher than in recent decades

The danger of a nuclear conflict is currently higher than it has been in recent decades, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said.

“I don’t want to get into a discussion about whether the likelihood of a nuclear conflict is high today, but it’s certainly higher than anything we’ve had in the last few decades,” he said. he said during the discussion “A World Sans START: What’s next?” on the Valdai International Discussion Club website.

Ryabkov noted that Moscow continues to adhere to the position that the world must be free from nuclear threat.

On the eve of talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping, a joint statement was adopted on the inadmissibility of starting a nuclear war. The text of the document, published on the Kremlin’s website, stressed that there could be no winner in such a conflict.

Earlier, the Press Secretary of the President of the Russian Federation, Dmitry Peskov, forwarded a question to the Russian Foreign Ministry regarding the State Department’s statement that the United States considers the suspension of Moscow’s participation to the New START Treaty was legally incorrect.

START (START-III) is a document that plans to limit the number of nuclear warheads, intercontinental ballistic missiles and bombers for Russia and the United States. Putin announced the unilateral suspension of Russia’s participation in the agreement in a message to the Federal Assembly. At the same time, the head of state stressed that Moscow was not withdrawing from the agreement, but was suspending its application.
