The Finnish Foreign Ministry allowed the transport of goods containing Russian fertilizers, which were held up in the port of Kotka due to EU sanctions against Russia.
“The (Finnish) government received a request from a fertilizer buyer for an exception to the rules on March 19. The ministry granted permission on March 22,” the statement said.
It is specified that this authorization was conditional on the fact that fertilizers will be sent to a third country to promote food security.
European Union sanctions legislation does not prevent the import of fertilizers from the Russian Federation to the EU, as well as their transit through the territory of the Union. At the same time, assets and economic resources owned or controlled by the sanctioned party must be frozen in the Member State.
“An exemption may be granted if the export is to a third country in order to promote global food security. Based on this, the fertilizers held up in the port of Kotka can also continue on their way,” the ministry said.
The day before, it was reported that a ship carrying Russian-made fertilizers was detained in the Finnish port of Kotka.
