The Volgograd Regional Duma reacted to reports of a referendum on renaming the city to the name of the Soviet period. There is no need to expect a return to Stalingrad maps in the near future.

Volgograd Regional Duma Chairman Alexander Bloshkin said that in the coming months the decision to rename Volgograd to Stalingrad will not be taken. This was announced by the chairman of the council for the study of public opinion on the name change during a meeting with public activists.

Earlier, Glavny Regionalny reported that a poll is starting in Volgograd on holding a referendum on renaming the city to Stalingrad. It was proposed to know the opinion of the population of a millionth city in a week. In response to reports of a possible referendum, the city’s mayor’s office said it had nothing to do with the initiative.

In late January, Russian President’s press secretary Dmitry Peskov denied reports that Volgograd had been renamed Stalingrad after Vladimir Putin’s trip to the city. According to the official representative of the Kremlin, the relevant issue was not discussed at that time.
