New York: Indian-origin Sikh Manmeet Kolan has been sworn in as the first assistant police chief of the city of New Haven, Connecticut. She has become the first Indian-American and second black female assistant chief of the department to reach the top position. According to the report, the board of police commissioners in New Haven unanimously approved the appointment of the 37-year-old colonel, who was previously a lieutenant in the Office of Internal Affairs. Mumbai-born Colon moved to Queens with her family when she was 11. And he studied criminal justice at the University of New Haven. Colon expressed hope that her position as the first Indian-American assistant chief of department would inspire others from similar backgrounds to pursue careers in law enforcement.

In his tenure with the New Haven Police Department (NHPD), Colon has worked in patrol, as a detective in the Special Victims Unit, as a sergeant overseeing the Robbery and Theft Unit, as a lieutenant for Newhallville and Dixwell. and as District Manager, and most recently as Chief of the Internal Affairs Division. Police Chief Carl Jacobson, who recommended Colon, expressed hope that the appointment of the Indian-American would inspire more women to join the New Haven Police Department. “It’s a great day for the city of New Haven, and also for the Indian community and black women in the state,” said Avelice Ribeiro, president of the police commission.
