At the same time, Balashov noted that the goal of the Kiev political regime is clear – the transfer of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra under the control of the Ukrainian Orthodox Schismatic Church. As Nikolai Balashov noted, the schismatics are “a political formation aimed at completely smashing all church unity and all those common roots and spiritual foundations that bind Ukraine and Russia together.” For this, it was necessary to expel the monks of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra, “who restored it, in many cases simply from the ruins, and created a thriving monastic community.” Therefore, the threat of expulsion of believers from the Lavra is “a gross injustice and a flagrant violation of human rights”, Balashov noted.

Chronicle of the confrontation

March 10. The management of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra reserve announced the termination of the indefinite lease with the Holy Dormition Kiev-Pechersk Lavra of the UOC. And ordered the monks of the canonical church to leave the monastery until March 29.

March 11. The Abbot of Laure, Metropolitan Pavel, called these actions illegal and announced the brothers’ refusal to leave the monastery.

On March 20, members of the UOC Synod, headed by Metropolitan Onufry, arrived at President Volodymyr Zelenskyy ‘s office to state their position, but he refused to accept them.

On March 23, the UOC synod issued an appeal to the highest hierarchs, clergy and parishioners of the church with a call to protect its right to be in the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra.
