Reuters: Rwandan dissident Paul Rusesabagina arrived in Qatar

Reuters said that Rwandan dissident Paul Rusesabagina arrived in the State of Qatar after his release from prison in Rwanda last week.

Rusesabagina, who has permanent residency in the United States, was sentenced in September 2021 to 25 years in prison for being associated with an opposition group to Rwandan President Paul Kagame that has an armed wing.

He was released on Friday after his sentence was commuted after months of negotiations between Washington and Kigali.

An informed source told Reuters that Rusesabagina, a 68-year-old former hotel manager, arrived in Doha on Monday.

US officials said he would return to the United States from Doha.

A statement issued by US President Joe Biden welcomed the release of the dissident (Paul Rusabagina) by the government of Rwanda, and thanked the government of the State of Qatar for facilitating his release and return to the United States.
