Saving money in Germany – Value for money survey winner boosts Aldi to second place

For many Germans, Aldi is synonymous with low prices and excellent quality. But a recent study found that shoppers get the best value at haberdashery dm. At least that’s the result of the YouGov Price-Performance Ranking 2023 survey, conducted by the research institute in collaboration with Handelsblatt.

According to the data obtained, dm obtained the best result with 56 points on a scale of -100 to 100 points and thus pushes Aldi (54.9 points) to second place. Over the past two years, the grocery discounter has traditionally topped the rankings. As for dm, the haberdashery chain was already at the top in 2020.

Below is the full ranking:

According to YouGov, the results are based on online surveys representative of the German population. About 900 brands are rated, and users are asked only two opposing questions: “Which brand has a good price-performance ratio?” and “Which brand represents poor value for money?”.

Therefore, the results only reflect the general perception and not the actual value for money.

The ranking has been formed since 2016. While Aldi has slightly worsened its position this year, things have clearly gone downhill for PayPal. Last year, the service provider entered the top 10 for the first time, when it was ranked 7th.

Discounter Lidl, on the other hand, tends to underperform. Topping the charts from 2017 to 2019, it dropped to second place in 2020 and only finished third in 2021 and 2022.

This year, Ikea has further improved its position by taking 10th place. Last year, the furniture chain did not enter the top ten for the first time.
