Russia and China are aware of the importance of the principle of the indivisibility of security, according to which “no country should strengthen its security at the expense of the security of others”. This was during a briefing with journalists on Wednesday March 29, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said. According to him, this principle should be taken into account in any negotiation.
“We (Russia and China) have a common opinion that the main thing now for all these discussions (on international security) is the introduction of the principle of the indivisibility of security. (Introduction) in all negotiations, in all agreements that are necessary in this sense. The principle of the indivisibility of security, according to which no country should strengthen its security to the detriment of the security of others. The principle is based on the UN Charter, which establishes the need to respect the sovereign equality of states,” Sergei Lavrov told a press conference after talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian, responding to a question from a RTVI correspondent Lavrov also said he respects Iran’s interest in a peaceful settlement of the situation in Ukraine.
During talks with Lavrov, Abdollahian said that the preparation of an agreement on the strategic partnership between Russia and Iran is at the final stage. “I am very grateful that the draft comprehensive agreement on strategic partnership has been finalized in Russia,” he said during the open part of the talks. “I really hope that within a month, the legal departments of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of the two States will finalize the draft of this agreement. But I want to stress that we are in the final stages before signing this agreement,” he said. In January 2022 Iran handed over Russia draft agreement on strategic cooperation for a period of 20 years. This was stated by the President of the Islamic Republic, Ebrahim Raisi, following negotiations with Russian leader Vladimir Putin.
Responding to a question from RTVI about the attitude towards China’s initiatives on global security and conflict resolution in Ukraine, Abdollahian noted that Tehran welcomes these proposals from Beijing. “Our relations with China are developing and are on the right track. And , of course, regarding China’s global security initiative, we have provided support. We welcome any initiative that helps develop lasting regional and global peace and security,” Iranian Foreign Minister said at a joint press conference with Sergei Lavrov.
March 10 Iran and Saudi Arabia announcement on the restoration of diplomatic relations severed in 2016. China played the role of mediator in the negotiations between Tehran and Riyadh on the normalization of dialogue.
On Feb. 23, China outlined its vision for a diplomatic settlement of the Ukraine issue by releasing its 12-point peace plan. Moscow welcomed Beijing’s proposals. Russia admits that some of the points of the peace plan “can be taken as a basis” for the future development of a peaceful solution to the conflict in Ukraine. “Many provisions of Beijing’s proposed plan are ‘in line with Russian approaches,'” Russian President Vladimir Putin said. From March 20 to 22, Chinese President Xi Jinping paid a state visit to Moscow. During the trip, the Ukrainian topic was also discussed, but in a joint statement signed after the talks, China said it would continue to adopt a neutral position.
