SpaceX founder Elon Musk, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak and more than 1,000 experts have called for the suspension of artificial intelligence (AI) systems more powerful than the recently unveiled GPT-4. Open letter published on the website of the non-profit association “Future of Life”.
The letter states that AI systems can pose serious risks to humanity, so they must be developed and managed with care. Instead, however, AI labs have been caught up in an uncontrolled race to develop and implement ever more powerful “digital minds” that even their creators cannot control.
“Modern AI systems are becoming competitive with humans in solving common problems, and we have to ask ourselves: should we allow machines to flood our information channels with propaganda and lies? Should we automate all the works?(…) Should we risk losing control of our civilization?asked the authors of the letter.
According to them, powerful AI systems can only be developed after ensuring that their effect will be positive and that the risks will be manageable. “Therefore, we call on all AI labs to immediately suspend, for at least six months, training on AI systems more powerful than GPT-4,” the statement read.
Meanwhile, according to the signatories, specialists must adopt security protocols for the development of AI.
Musk has previously expressed concerns about AI developments. How declared billionaire in an interview with the New York Times, “smart people don’t think a computer can ever be as smart as they are,” but that’s a misconception. “We are approaching a situation where AI will become much smarter than humans,” Musk said, adding that could happen within five years.
