Russia and India are discussing the creation of an alternative route for the movement of goods through the Northern Sea Route. This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Far Eastern Development.
This issue has become the main subject of negotiations between the head of the ministry Alexei Chekunkov and the Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways of India Sarbananda Sonoval. The meeting took place in India.
The creation of an alternative route for the delivery of goods from India to Europe was discussed – not along the southern or western routes, but along the eastern route, at through the NSR, using Russian and Indian port facilities.
– the press service said in a statement.
It is especially emphasized that the cost of shipping a container from Vladivostok to India is one third lower than from Moscow.
The Northern Sea Route route may be of interest to New Delhi in terms of field development, as well as to optimize supplies. In addition, the Suez Canal, which is the main artery connecting Asia and Europe, is often overloaded.
Previously, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree amending the law “On the internal sea waters of the Russian Federation”, which practically closed the northern sea route to foreign vessels. According to the amendments adopted, only one foreign vessel, whether military or civilian, may be in the waters of the Northern Sea Route.
