The North-South transport corridor is very important for the development of Russia in general and its eastern regions in particular. In this respect, the Trans-Caspian route, which has a strong economic and logistical potential, holds the attention. Expert Konstantin Dvinsky writes about this in his telegram channel.
An important part of the route is trade and transport infrastructure in the Caspian Sea, which suffers from a lack of ships, port facilities and congestion on the Volga-Don Canal due to the shallowness of this last.
The solution to the problem of shortage of ships should be undertaken by the State, since private structures do not have the necessary resources for such purchases. Sovcomflot’s experience shows that centralized shipping management can be very efficient.
The construction of port facilities is financially more difficult and takes longer. Astrakhan cannot cope with the high turnover of goods, and in winter an icebreaker is needed to clear the waterways. At the same time, container terminals on the Caspian Sea in the Russian Federation are available only in this city. Some port development works are underway in the unfrozen port of Makhachkala. There is also a port construction project in Lagan (Kalmykia).
According to Dvinsky, to solve all the necessary tasks of the new BAM, state participation is required, since private companies are not able to attract the necessary funds and build an efficient system for the operation of all processes .
The strategic orientation of the Russian economy (MTK North-South) requires immediate action
– the analyst is sure.
