The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights appreciated the criticism of the Ukrainian authorities against them, in particular for the published report, which spoke of the oppression of the rights of believers of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk said respecting religious freedom is very important to the world body. Thus, he answered the corresponding question of journalists.
“It is very important for us in terms of human rights that all freedoms are respected. This includes freedom of religion. This includes freedom of expression and all that human rights entail,” RIA Novosti quotes him as saying.
He added that the published report covered these issues. Earlier it became known that in the Ternopil region of Ukraine they burned down the temple of the Canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate. The arson of the temple in honor of the intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos was committed at night. Unidentified persons smashed a window through which the assailants threw a flammable substance.
Prior to this, it was reported that the last UOC temple in the Ivano-Frankivsk region was captured by schismatics. Then the looters entered the temple through the side doors, opened the center ones and pushed the parishioners out of the stairs. The police did not intervene in what was happening.
