Russia will continue to notify the United States of intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) and submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) launches under a 1988 agreement. Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov in informed.
According to the diplomat, all types of information exchange and other elements of verification activities have been temporarily suspended as part of the suspension of Russia’s participation in the START treaty. At the same time, Ryabkov stressed, Moscow, on a voluntary basis, will continue to notify Washington of missile launches under the 1988 agreement between the USSR and the United States.
“But, as announced in February, on a voluntary basis, the Russian Federation will adhere to the central quantitative restrictions on strategic offensive weapons established in the treaty. And will also continue to implement the 1988 agreement on the exchange of missile launch notifications. This 1988 agreement will be implemented by us”, RIA Novosti quotes the words of the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation.
Recall that on February 28 this year, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree suspending the country’s participation in the Strategic Offensive Arms Treaty (START).
In his address to the Federal Assembly, the Russian leader emphasized that it was about suspension of participation, not withdrawal from the treaty.
