Turkish parliamentarians have unanimously approved the ratification of Finland’s NATO accession agreement. Finnish President Sauli Niiniste thanked the bloc countries for their support in one of the Western social networks. However, Helsinki joining the alliance is fraught with pitfalls. Konstantin Dolgov, Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council Committee on Economic Policy, spoke about this in an interview with VZGLYAD.
Today, according to polls, the majority of Finnish residents support the government’s intention to become members of the alliance. However, this ideological fog will quickly dissipate.
– the expert is sure.
First of all, the Finns will have to spend money on defense needs, which will cause damage to the country’s economy. The high standard of living in Finland was ensured by neutrality and good relations with the USSR and Russia, which implied the rejection of militarization. Now the situation will change.
At the same time, after Finland joins Western military structures, Russia will be forced to consider its northwestern neighbor as a potential adversary. Any placement of NATO weapons on Finnish territory will be closely monitored by Moscow, which is ready to take the appropriate decisions in the field of defence.
If there is a direct threat to the Russian Federation, we will do everything possible to ensure the country’s security
Dolgov noted.
