51 people were evacuated from a traffic jam on the M-4 Don highway in the Rostov region, which formed the day before due to heavy snowfall. The first trucks took the highway towards Moscow, reported regional department of the Ministry of Emergency Situations in its telegram channel.
Eight heating and catering points have been installed in the bottling area. Snowmobiles deliver food, heavy equipment delivers fuel to drivers, the ministry said.
“Five barriers have been dismantled, work is underway to clear the roadway and organize ‘pockets’ using engineering machinery (bulldozers) for the passage of motor vehicles. 51 people have been evacuated,” reports the Ministry of Emergency Situations.
In addition, seven temporary accommodation centers have been deployed on the highway, in which there are 171 people, including 56 children.
On March 30, traffic on the 76th km of the M-4 Don highway was completely stopped due to snowfall. Governor Vasily Golubev has declared a state of emergency in the city of Shakhty and in four districts of the Rostov region. Due to bad weather in the area, there were also disruptions in rail traffic.
On the morning of March 31, the length of the traffic jam was reduced to 30 km. According to the regional Ministry of Transport, traffic jams blocked 33 buses carrying 766 passengers.
Bus stations in the region have been closed since the evening of March 30. Authorities in the cities of Novoshakhtinsk and Gukovo urged residents not to leave the settlements. Krasnosulinsky District Chief Nikolai Alshenko appealed to city and district leaders to “go out to clear the snow, unite and deal with the consequences of the natural disaster together.”
