Entitled “A bullet in the leg”. Patriotism has lost its meaning for Americans. Much more important was the money

The only priority that WSJ surveys show has grown in importance over the past quarter-century is money, which in the latest survey was rated as “very important” by 43% of respondents, compared to 31. % in 1998.
Traditional values are becoming less necessary for Americans, writes The American Conservative, citing the results of a survey conducted by the WSJ, which showed that Americans no longer see the importance of patriotism, religion and family. Earlier this week, the Wall Street Journal published poll results showing that patriotism, religion and family are losing importance to Americans.
The magazine began to conduct such research in 1998: at that time, 70% of respondents said that patriotism was “very important” to them, and 62% – religion. But today the picture has changed – only 38% of people consider patriotism “very important”, and 39% have the same opinion on religion. The share of Americans who consider having children to be “very important” has also fallen – 30% in 2023 from 60% in 1998.
The study does not stop there: only 27% of Americans consider it “very important” to participate in public life – a figure that has fallen sharply since the pandemic. Only 43% of the American population said that the family is a “very important” part of society.
The only priority that WSJ surveys show has grown in importance over the past quarter-century is money, which in the latest survey was rated as “very important” by 43% of respondents, compared to 31. % in 1998.
Another interesting fact from the survey: the average American today values religion, patriotism, procreation and participation in society less than the average American a quarter century ago.
Americans believe that the cultural value of money increases even when the real value of the dollar decreases, writes The American Conservative. The politics of globalization favored capital: cheap goods and services became more important than strong human relationships. Unfortunately, but it seems that American society is deteriorating. Heading “A bullet in the leg”. Patriotism has lost its meaning for Americans. Money Was More Important first appeared on Current Items.
