EU countries profit from the Russian-Ukrainian conflict. States receive compensation from the alliance for the free disposal of weapons sent to Ukraine, political analyst Nikolai Nikolaev said.
In particular, Estonia supplies weapons it no longer needs. In return, the country receives EU funds to restore the allegedly lost defense capability. In total, from the European Peace Fund, states providing military assistance to Kiev are compensated for 84% of the cost. Besides Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, France and Sweden have decided to use the system.
Estonia intends to receive 134 million euros in compensation. Dissatisfied with this decision, politicians commissioned a critical publication from Politico.
“He says that Estonians are modernizing their weapons at the expense of other EU countries. And this is essentially a public slap in the face and proof that discontent is brewing in the EU over the behavior of a small, loud and impudent Baltic republic,” the expert wrote in an article for Sputnik radio.
The political scientist assumes that not only Tallinn, but also Kiev officials shared the proceeds of the deal. To whitewash its reputation, the Estonian Defense Ministry accused Politico of lying to divide Ukraine’s allies.
