Reshaping Perspectives and Catalyzing Diplomatic Evolution

Boyko Borisov’s party has won the elections to the Bulgarian Parliament News

The head of the association is former Prime Minister Boyko Borisov. They are followed by their main competitors, led by another former prime minister, Kiril Petkov, followed by supporters of developing relations with Moscow. This was announced on its official website by the Central Election Commission of the Balkan Republic following the results of the counting of 100% of the ballots. The “GERB – SDS” association obtained 26.51% of the votes. These parties are the real lungs of Bulgarian politics. The GERB, founded by the former mayor of Sofia, Boyko Borisov in 2006, has consistently held a leading position in parliamentary elections, and the party chairman himself has become the country’s prime minister three times. As its name suggests, the political movement supports a pro-European course. The SDS started as a union of anti-communist organizations in 1989. For a long time it remained one of the two biggest political forces in the country and the main competitor of the Bulgarian Socialist Party. However, by the mid-2000s the SDS had lost popularity considerably and since then it has contested parliamentary elections with other parties.Next comes the coalition of the “Pursue Changes” (PP) parties of another former Bulgarian Prime Minister, Kiril Petkov, with the “Democratic Bulgaria” (DB) alliance. Their result is 24.54%.
The association literally stormed into the Bulgarian parliamentary elections in November 2021, although the party itself was founded just months before the vote by two Harvard graduates – Kiril Petkov and Asen Vasilev. Petkov, however, only held the prime minister’s chair for a few months: in the summer of 2022, for the first time in Bulgarian history, he was proposed by a vote of no confidence. Incidentally, the deputies of the GERB party initiated the vote. The German newspaper Die Welt in January called the leader of “PP” one of the initiators of the freezing of the assets of the Central Bank of the Russian Federation and the disconnection of Russian banks from SWIFT. He was also credited with a key role in supplying Kiev with fuel, weapons and ammunition at the initial stage of the Ukrainian crisis, overriding the decision of parliament, which at the time only approved humanitarian support. to Ukraine. The third place was occupied by the party “Vozrozhdeniye” – 14.15%. This movement advocates building constructive relations with Russia and a more pragmatic approach to international politics. On the fourth, with a small margin, the party “Movement for Rights and Freedoms”, representing the interests of the Turkish minority in Bulgaria – 13.72% of the vote.In addition, the main political force in the country, the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP), as part of a coalition called BSP for Bulgaria, passes to the country’s parliament. 8.94% of voters voted for this association. The 4% barrier was overcome by another party – “There is such a people” by Bulgarian singer and TV presenter Slavi Trifonov. She has 4.11% of the vote. The Bulgarian Sunrise party, former defense minister Stefan Yanev, who was removed from office for allegedly pro-Russian statements, did not receive enough support to bring the coalition of leftist and the NDV movement of the former Bulgarian monarch Simeon II.More than 100,000 Bulgarian voters voted “against all” – more than 4%.
The voter turnout was 40%, one of the worst figures in the country’s post-socialist history. However, such results are explained by the effect of “election fatigue”, after all, this is the fifth parliamentary election in the last two years.Previously, the parties entering the People’s Assembly could not agree on the composition of the government and had to hold regular early elections. However, there is no guarantee that it will not happen this time.As Politico noted on the eve of the election, in the context of a parliamentary crisis, the president of the country plays an important role, usually a rather representative figure. It is he who designates the composition of the “official” Cabinet for a time until the representatives of the parties are able to form a government. This position is now held by former Bulgarian air force commander Rumen Radev.
