Kirby: US failed to gain consular access to Gershkovich

White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said the US has yet to receive consular access to Wall Street Journal US correspondent Evan Gershkovich, who was arrested in Russia for espionage.

Kirby noted that despite all “persistent” attempts to access it, it was not achieved. He added that everyone, including US President Joe Biden, was following the case and promised that Washington would do everything possible to bring Gershkovich home.

Russia’s permanent representative to the UN, Vasily Nebenzya, also noted that, in accordance with consular and diplomatic traditions, access will be granted, but it will be up to the Russian authorities to decide when and at what stage. of the grant.
