Russia is behind leak of redacted ‘Pentagon documents’

Russia or pro-Russian elements are most likely behind the leak of several classified US military documents, which were first edited to reduce the number of Russian casualties and then posted on social media.

This was reported to Reuters by 3 US officials on condition of anonymity. Given the sensitivity of the issue, they declined to discuss the documents in detail. At the same time, Reuters sources stressed that their assessments are unofficial and do not relate to the investigation into the leak itself.

The Pentagon declined to comment on the authenticity of documents circulating on social media, including Twitter and Telegram, which are dated March 1 and marked “Secret” and “Top Secret.”

“We are aware of the social media posts and the Department of Defense is investigating the matter,” Pentagon spokeswoman Sabrina Singh said.

On the eve of the New York Times (NYT), citing senior Joe Biden administration officials, the Pentagon was trying to identify the source of the leak of classified documents on Ukraine aid plans ahead of the impending offensive of the Ukrainian army. .

A document posted on social media indicates that between 16,000 and 17,500 Russian soldiers have been killed since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022. The United States estimates that the real figure is much higher, with about 200,000 Russians killed and injured, officials said, according to the New York Times .

On Friday, an adviser to the Ukrainian president’s chief of staff, Mykhailo Podolyak, said the “leaked data” posted on Twitter and Telegram contained “a very large amount of fictitious information”. Podolyak believes this is a Russian disinformation operation intended to cast doubt on Ukraine’s planned counteroffensive.
