According to Jochen Ahlswede, head of the BASE department, highly radioactive waste is dangerous for people, animals and the environment. The legislative objective is to ensure the security of this waste for a period of one million years. It is assumed that they can be removed from closed storage for at least five hundred years. Therefore, future generations need information related to storage security issues.
The expert also noted that this means storing information in as many different ways as possible. It is necessary to balance the advantages and disadvantages of different media. First, special paper will be used to store information for several hundred years. In addition, specialists use digital media. They are large and easy to copy.
Ahlswede thinks the next two or three generations will be busy building, operating and closing the vault. The next twenty generations should be able to recycle waste. Only two generations benefit from nuclear power.
