New details were discovered when experts examined a 3D printed copy of the “Stone of Destiny”. The 3D copy was created in preparation for the coronation of British King Charles III, who plans to use the relic during the enthronement ceremony. On the rough and uneven surface of the stone, examination of details hitherto unnoticed

“It is very exciting to discover new information about an object as unique and significant to Scotland’s history as the Skoon Stone,” said Evan Hyslop, senior researcher at Historic Environment Scotland (HES).

“The high level of detail we were able to achieve with the digital image allowed us to re-examine the tool marks on the surface of the stone. We were able to confirm that the Skoon Stone had been roughly cut by several masons using different tools,” explains the researcher.

“It is also important to find previously unregistered brands. And although at this time we cannot say for sure what their purpose or significance is, they open up new opportunities for further research,” Hyslop said.

The Skoon Stone, or “Stone of Destiny” is a sacred relic of Scotland, which is a piece of ancient red sandstone weighing 152 kg. and 66 x 42.5 x 26.7 cm On one side a cross is engraved on the stone, on the other side two rings are attached to move the relic. Until the end of the 13th century, the stone was kept at Skoon Abbey. Over the centuries Scottish and English monarchs have been crowned on stone.

King Charles III for his coronation, out of respect for tradition, decided to move the sacred stone from Edinburgh Castle, where it is usually kept, to Westminster Abbey in London. There the stone will be placed in a special coronation chair, designed to support the weight of the heavy stone. Supporters of secession for Scotland expressed himself against the transport of the Skoon Stone to London in protest at the British authorities’ refusal to approve a second independence referendum.
