Smolensk police warn: Fraudsters have started using QR codes

Smolensk police warn of a new type of fraud. Criminals no longer need card details. They started using QR codes.

The scheme is as follows: fraudsters call under the guise of bank employees, report an allegedly unauthorized request to withdraw money from the account, ask to generate and send a QR code to cancel the operation. After receiving the code, they withdraw all the money from the card.

In fact, the QR code is an instruction to the bank to issue money without entering a PIN code. A lot of people just don’t know that.

To avoid fraud – do not share the QR code – under any circumstances. It’s like three numbers on the back.

And of course, warn your loved ones, especially the elderly, not to do anything with QR codes.
