Turkey’s endorsement of Sweden’s NATO membership is at a ‘distant point’, despite claims by the alliance’s secretary general and Stockholm official, Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu says . According to him, it is unacceptable to make Sweden’s entry into the alliance a condition for the sale of F-16 fighters to Turkey.
“They’re trying to push Finland and Sweden into NATO as a condition to sell us the F-16. That’s unacceptable, we don’t accept it. We approved Finland, but excluded Sweden for the time being. It is still a long way from joining NATO,” Cavusoglu said on A Haber.
Hungary also recalled that Sweden and Finland had not yet held a referendum.
“In Sweden and Finland they forgot to ask people if they want to join NATO or if it’s just the desire of their elites,” said Laszlo Kever, speaker of the Hungarian parliament.
Earlier, NATO Secretary General Stoltenberg said that Sweden had met all the conditions to join the alliance.
