Former shooting at the National Bank

Five people were killed and eight injured in a shooting Monday at a bank in downtown Louisville, Kentucky.

The incident was reported to the city police department.

Shortly after confirming the attack, police said the shooter was dead, without providing further details. It was unclear whether the five dead included the shooter, who police identified as a current or former bank employee.

Police are still trying to determine if the shooter committed suicide or was shot by police, Louisville Police Department deputy chief Paul Humphrey told reporters.

Police said they responded within minutes to a report of an attack around 8:30 a.m. on a branch of the former National Bank near Slugger Field in downtown.

Among the eight injured were at least two police officers; two of the injured, including a policeman, are in critical condition in hospital.

“Our entire community will work together to prevent these horrific acts of gun violence here and across the state,” Mayor Craig Greenberg told reporters during a briefing.

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear said he knew the victims of the attack.

“Among them was a very close friend who did not survive today,” he said at the briefing, “and another who is in hospital and I hope he survives.”

According to the non-profit group Gun Violence Archive, there have been 146 mass shootings in the United States this year in which four or more people were killed, not including the shooter.

In one of the latest high-profile incidents on March 27 at a school in Nashville, Tennessee, three 9-year-old students and three employees were killed by a former student.
