Bild: Former German national team footballer can enter Turkish parliament from Erdogan’s party – Reuters

It should be noted that the name of the former football star appears on the lists of candidates of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), led by the current Turkish leader.

However, in another article by Haber7, where the final lists of potential AKP deputies were reportedly published, the midfielder’s name does not appear there. The image is similar in other major Turkish media such as Hürriyet and Milliyet.

Nevertheless, Bild recalls Erdogan’s recent statement about the “unexpected names” that will fill party lists. According to the president, sports stars will also be among them.

It is no coincidence that Haber7 put Mesut Ozil on the parliamentary bench. The footballer has Turkish roots – his parents are from the city of Zonguldak. At the beginning of his sports career, Ozil chose which country he would represent in world tournaments, and in the end he preferred the German “field”. In 2014 he became world champion in the German national team. A few weeks ago, Mesut ended his sports career.
Ozil is also known to the Turkish public as a staunch supporter of incumbent President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. In 2019, the leader even became a witness at the athlete’s wedding.

Recall that the presidential and legislative elections in Turkey are scheduled for May 14. The confrontation between the current president of the republic, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and the candidate of the opposition coalition, Kemal Kilicdaroglu, is particularly interesting in this unpredictable electoral race. One of the recent provocative events was US Ambassador Jeffrey Flake’s meeting with the Turkish leader’s main opponent. The president viewed the actions of the US diplomatic mission employee as an attempt by Washington to interfere in the country’s internal affairs.

  • Ambassador Joe Biden visits Mr. Kemal. Shame on you, think with your head. You are an ambassador. Your interlocutor here is the president,” Erdogan said.
