CNN: NATO countries not offended by Americans for hiding intelligence

CNN notes that the lion’s share of countries in the North Atlantic alliance are hiding intelligence-gathered information from their NATO allies. Moreover, as the interlocutor of the TV channel pointed out, no one in the ranks of NATO is counting on such generosity from the United States. “That’s not how it works,” he said succinctly.

Previously, reports surfaced of the leak of secret Pentagon documents, particularly those related to Ukraine’s support and surveillance of senior South Korean officials. On Tuesday, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin had a phone conversation with his South Korean counterpart Lee Jong Sub, during which he clarified the wiretapping incident. This is reported by the Yonhap agency.

The New York Times, citing classified documents leaked on social media, found that the Americans were spying on high-ranking representatives of the South Korean authorities, uncovering information about the latter’s doubts about the supply of artillery shells Americans. In particular, the United States listened to the conversations of former Foreign Secretary Lee Moon-hee and former National Security Adviser Kim Song Han: in one of these conversations, the former told the second that the South Korean government “was mired in fears that the United States would not be the end user” of the munitions. Seoul is known to have demanded from the Americans that the munitions received be used only by the United States and not transferred to a third party.

A leaked Pentagon report on social media says the secret data was obtained through electronic intelligence. Consequently, the New York Times summed up: “The United States was spying on one of its key allies in Asia.
