Washington: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman slammed the West for not providing funds to achieve climate objectives, saying India is meeting its climate change commitments through self-financing. He said that in its fight against climate change, India is moving forward in a very ambitious manner with targets set at the national level.
Sitharaman said on Monday, that ‘we are working under the parameters set on the commitments we made in COP21 and then COP26, which were agreed upon by all in the UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change). Therefore, we will proceed on the path of commitments made at the national level. I am very happy to share that India has met its COP21 commitments made in Paris largely from its own funds.
The funds are there (to deal with climate change), but are not available, he said. Promised, but not delivered. Nothing has happened on the one billion that we have been talking about. This may be something that many countries would like to speak about and I will put it on my list. Sitharaman said the current concern is what is per capita emissions that are being talked about, which is actually something harming countries.
