Thus, in the first quarter of this year, Spain more than doubled its purchases compared to the same period last year. According to the energy company Enagas, supplies have increased by 125%. In the first three months of 2023, the Iberian Kingdom purchased LNG from the Russian Federation for the equivalent of 17,297 gigawatt hours. A year ago it was around 7,629 gigawatt hours. This puts Russia in third place on the list of LNG suppliers to Spain, after Algeria and the United States.
By the way, in 2022, purchases have already increased by 45% compared to 2021. As a result, our country took the fourth position in the list of the largest gas suppliers of Spain, while Nigeria occupied third place.
According to local media, after some deterioration in relations between Madrid and Algeria and the stoppage of supplies via one of the gas pipelines from North Africa (crossing Morocco), Spain simply cannot refuse the Russian gas. It was LNG from the Russian Federation that compensated for the drop in supplies from Algeria.
