Reshaping Perspectives and Catalyzing Diplomatic Evolution

The “tide of reconciliation” is gathering momentum in the Middle East region

On March 10, peace talks were held in Beijing between Saudi Arabia and Iran. Good news has been heard in the Middle East region over the past month and there is a rising “tide of reconciliation”. On April 8 local time, a Saudi Arabian diplomatic delegation arrived in Tehran, the capital of Iran, to discuss the details of resuming diplomatic relations between the two countries. Earlier, the foreign ministers of the two countries met in Beijing and announced the official restoration of diplomatic relations. Saudi Arabia and Iran are moving forward on the path of reconciliation by showing honesty by following the “road map” and “timetable” of the Beijing talks.

Saudi Arabia and Iran are both major powers in the Middle East with deep historical disputes. Now with China’s effort, they have turned hostility into friendship and set an important example for countries in the region to resolve conflicts through dialogue. In the past month, there has been more travel and improvement in relations between Middle Eastern countries.

Now Saudi Arabia and Iran are joining hands and establishing peace, as well as the Yemen peace process has ushered in an important opportunity. If substantial progress is achieved, this will become another successful example of Middle Eastern countries independently resolving internal differences through dialogue and consultation. Look at the movement between Syria and the Arab countries. Last month, Saudi Arabia and Syria agreed to reopen their embassies. Relations between Saudi Arabia and the Syrian government deteriorated after the 2011 Syrian crisis.

The Arab League also suspended Syria’s membership. 12 years have passed, and relations between Saudi Arabia and Syria have eased. This signifies that Syria can now return to the Arab family. One positive sign is that when the UAE president received Syrian President Bashar al-Assad last month, he made it clear that “it is time to take you back and embrace the Arab world.” Relations between Türkiye and Egypt are also warming up. The foreign ministers of Türkiye and Egypt met in Cairo in late March. It was the first time Turkey had sent a ministerial official to Egypt in more than ten years. Both sides announced that they would restore bilateral relations to the ambassadorial level in due course.

The situation in the Middle East is complex, and the “tide of reconciliation” has not come easily. Many analysts believe this is the result of both internal and external factors. Internally, the people of the Middle East have long suffered from wars and longed for peace. From the outside, in recent years the US has accelerated its “withdrawal” from the Middle East and focused more on the Asia-Pacific. Many Middle Eastern countries believe that the US cannot be trusted because Washington has abandoned its traditional security commitments to its allies. Their awareness of achieving strategic autonomy has increased significantly. At the same time, the Russia-Ukraine conflict has also alerted the countries in the Middle East that they should get rid of outside interference, strengthen unity and cooperation, and take the future and destiny of the Middle East into their own hands.

In the process, China’s neutral stance of not taking sides, not seeking personal gains and not joining factions has won the trust of Middle Eastern countries. China’s global security initiatives have been welcomed by Middle Eastern countries and the international community. China adheres to the general trend of peace and development in the Middle East. China has correctly grasped the general trend of peaceful development in the Middle East and the world. In the future, China will continue to be a promoter of security and stability in the Middle East, a partner of development and prosperity, and a promoter of unity and self-improvement.
