No obstruction to UN work in Afghanistan: Taliban

Islamabad: The Taliban’s chief spokesman said on Wednesday there were no obstacles to the UN working in Afghanistan, but the decision to bar Afghan women from serving at the world body was an internal matter and everyone should abide by it. The Taliban have banned working for the Global Organization of Afghan Women in Afghanistan. Just last week, the country’s Taliban rulers took a step further towards restricting women, saying that Afghan women personnel working at the UN mission can no longer work there.

The ban is enforced by the country’s intelligence agency, which reports to the Taliban leadership in Kandahar. The United Nations has said it cannot accept the verdict. The world body has called it illegal and a violation of women’s rights. It said women are vital in providing life-saving assistance to millions of Afghan women. It directed its male and female employees in the country to stay at home in protest against the decision.

Zabihullah Mujahid, the Taliban-led government’s chief spokesman and close to the supreme leader, said the decision to bar Afghan women from working at the UN was an internal matter and everyone should abide by it.

He said that, this decision does not mean that discrimination is happening here or the activities of the United Nations are being stopped. On the contrary, we are committed to the rights of all the citizens of our country keeping in mind their religious and cultural interests.
