Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki visited the United States for meetings aimed at strengthening economic and defense cooperation between the two countries.
Morawiecki met Vice President Kamala Harris for talks, one of the topics of which was further support for Ukraine.
During the three-day visit, he will also meet with representatives of US defense companies.
Morawiecki said he wanted “to strengthen the alliance with our most powerful ally, with a country that guarantees security in Europe and above all guarantees security in our part of Europe”.
After Russia’s large-scale invasion of Ukraine last year, the United States increased its military presence in Poland and used Poland as a transit country for military and humanitarian aid to Ukraine. .
Before flying out of Warsaw, Morawiecki told reporters at the airport that US-Polish relations “have not been this good for a long time and perhaps never have been this strong”.
He said his meetings with representatives of the US defense industry will discuss current and planned purchases worth billions of dollars.
Poland buys F-35 fighter jets, Abrams tanks, HIMARS artillery systems and Patriot missile launchers from the United States.
Morawiecki’s visit was preceded by two visits to Poland by US President Joe Biden following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also paid an official visit to Warsaw last week.
The prime minister said Poland’s alliance with the United States is the “absolute basis of security” for both countries.
“It is based on two pillars: economic cooperation and defense cooperation. I am going to the United States to strengthen these two pillars,” he said.
Morawiecki said American companies have invested around $25 billion in Poland, creating thousands of jobs.
