President Joe Biden said Thursday that an investigation into who is responsible for leaking sensitive government information and posting it on social media is nearing completion.
After Biden’s meeting with Irish President Michael Higgins, reporters asked the White House chief a question about it.
“As you know, a full-scale investigation is underway,” Biden replied. – (It is led by) the intelligence community and the Department of Justice. And they are about to (draw) conclusions.
According to Biden, he’s not so much concerned about the nature of the data leaked in the incident as the very fact of the leak.
“…I’m afraid that has happened,” the president said.
Last week, the Justice Department opened a criminal investigation into leaked Pentagon documents. The military department is conducting an internal investigation and assessing the damage caused by the release of hundreds of confidential documents. According to CNN, the criminal investigation is being led by the FBI office in Washington, including a team of counterintelligence investigators with experience in the field.
According to the Washington Post, the person who uploaded the confidential documents is a man known by the pseudonym “OG”. It is assumed that he is in his early twenties and works at one of the US military bases. He also reportedly created a chat group on Discord, an online platform popular with video game fans, during the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to members of the group, “OG” boasted of being a good shooter and also had access to classified government information. He first told the group the contents of the documents he had access to, then proceeded to photograph them and upload them to the chat.
A statement released by the Discord platform on Wednesday stressed that the company is cooperating with the investigation.
