China’s new defense minister to visit Shoigu

China’s new Defense Minister Li Shangfu will arrive in Russia for talks with Russian Defense Ministry chief Sergei Shoigu, the Russian Defense Ministry’s press service reported.

“From April 16 to 18, 2023, the Minister of Defense of the People’s Republic of China, Colonel General Li Shangfu, will pay an official visit to the Russian Federation. This is his first trip abroad since his appointment as head of the Chinese military in March 2023,” the press service said in a statement.

It should be noted that during the talks between the defense ministers of the two states, the parties will discuss topical issues of global and regional security.

On March 12, it became known that Colonel General Li Shangfu, who has been under US personal sanctions since 2018, has become the PRC’s new defense minister. Washington suspects him of having purchased Su-35 fighters and S-400 systems from Russia.
