On Friday April 14, the Orthodox Church remembers Saint Mary of Egypt. She is considered the patron saint of penitents. In her youth, Mary left her parents and became a prostitute. Once she tried to enter the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, but some force wouldn’t let her in. It was only then that I realized that I was not leading the right way of life and decided to correct myself.
In Rus’, this day was called “Empty cabbage soup”, because in April the peasants, as a rule, lacked cabbage. “Schi – at least rinse the shoes” – our ancestors repeated. The place of cabbage in the dish was taken by sorrel or nettle.
According to folk signs, if there is a thunderstorm on April 14, the summer will be dry. Lightning is visible at sunset – it will rain in the morning, no stars are visible in the night sky – in warm weather, blue clouds – before the “wet” autumn.
Today you can buy clothes, analyze your own problems and failures, have fun, spend time with friends. It is forbidden to cook dishes from dough, to brag about one’s achievements, to cut bread with a knife. Also, you cannot wash the floors of the house and leave the front door open.
