Twitter restricted access to Medvedev’s post about Ukraine ‘disappearing’

Twitter restricted access to the post of Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of Russia Dmitry Medvedev, in which the politician said that Ukraine would disappear as a state. On this subject informed RIA News.

Medvedev’s tweet became unavailable in Germany and Poland. When consulting the publication, a notice appears indicating that access to it is restricted due to the laws in force in these countries.

Medvedev’s aide Oleg Osipov told RIA Novosti that “this will not go unanswered”.

On April 8, Dmitry Medvedev published a post on social networks, including Twitter, in which he wrote that Ukraine was going to disappear because “no one on the planet needs it”. “Pieces of Russia, called Ukraine in the 1991 borders, are just a misunderstanding generated by the collapse of the USSR,” the publication says.

Users asked Twitter owner Elon Musk if Medvedev’s tweet violated the platform’s rules. “All news is propaganda to some degree. Let people decide for themselves,” the businessman replied.

Musk also said Russian President Vladimir Putin allegedly called him a war criminal “for helping Ukraine”. “So he’s definitely not my best friend,” the billionaire said.

Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov later told reporters that the Russian president had not called Musk a war criminal. “Apparently Musk was not entirely right or, rather, misinformed. <…> Putin never said such a thing,” the Kremlin spokesman said.

In the spring of 2022, Twitter’s administration announced that it would stop recommending accounts associated with authorities in countries that restrict Internet access to users. Russia was one of those countries. In early April 2023, The Telegraph newspaper reported that the social network had lifted restrictions on search results from official accounts of Russian government officials and departments.
