According to a Malaysian government report, the plane’s turboprop was not engaged correctly, causing the pilot to lose control and the crash. The report also indicated that the turboprop was Australian-made. Also the aircraft was also Australian made. There was no other problem with the aircraft.

The plane was on its way to Kota Kinabalu, the capital of Sabah state, when the accident happened. The plane crash killed the then Chief Minister of Sabah State, Tun Fuad Stephens, and the state’s Housing Minister, Finance Minister and Communications Minister.

According to the report, more goods were loaded in the plane than required. The baggage of the second aircraft was also loaded in the same aircraft.
