. Iranian court finds 10 servicemen guilty of 2020 Ukrainian airliner crash.
An Iranian court has sentenced ten members of the country’s air defense force to prison terms. They were found guilty of involvement in the crash of a Ukrainian airliner in January 2020. Judiciary website Mizan Online reported on the court’s decision.
The unit commander was sentenced to 10 years in prison, while nine others received terms ranging from one to three years.
On January 8, 2020, Iran’s air defense system shot down Ukraine International Airlines Flight PS752 shortly after taking off from Tehran. The disaster killed all 176 people on board. Most of them were Iranians and Canadians, many had dual nationality.
Three days later, the country’s armed forces admitted that the plane flying to Kiev had been shot down “by mistake”. Iranian air defenses reportedly mistook the Boeing for a decoy after it headed for an Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps base.
