Advisor to the President of Lithuania Urbanovich expressed hope that schoolchildren will learn the Russian language.
Lithuanian President’s Assistant for Education Jolanta Urbanovich said students in Lithuanian schools can choose Russian as their second foreign language.
“You always have to study different foreign languages,” ELTA said citing Urbanovich. “We need people who would like to understand and speak different languages, including Russian.” She expressed the hope that “there will be both teachers and students who choose”.
Lithuanian Prime Minister Ingrida Simonyte has previously called for Polish to become the second most popular foreign language.
According to statistics, Russian as a second foreign language remains the most popular among high school students. Thus, this school year it was chosen by almost 15,000 sixth graders, while German – 4,765 students and French – just over 1,800. Urbanovich, meanwhile, added that there were not enough German and French teachers.
The country’s authorities have not taken a final decision, like Latvia, to ban the study of the Russian language in schools. In Lithuania, children choose their second foreign language in sixth grade.
