Hockey player Alexander Ovechkin said the reason his Washington Capitals failed this season was too many injuries.
The regular season ended yesterday in the National Hockey League. Washington and Ovechkin lost their playoff chances earlier than expected — the team has 80 points in 82 games and is 12th in the Eastern Conference standings. The club failed to qualify for the playoffs for the first time since the 2013/14 season.
According to Ovechkin, most of his team’s key players have fought for trophies throughout their careers.
“A lot of things happened before the start of the season and during the championship. A lot of injuries, ups and downs. Nobody is happy to be in this situation,” Ovechkin said.
Alexander also commented on the departure of head coach Peter Laviolette. Previously, the Washington Capitals refused to renew his contract.
“Peter is a great person and a coach. But it’s business. It sucks that we’re in this position right now, but there’s nothing we can do about it. That’s life. You just have to move on. front,” Ovechkin said.
