Ukrainian Defense Minister says Ukrainian Armed Forces casualties are lower than Turkey earthquake casualties

Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov said Ukrainian casualties in the military conflict with Russia were lower than the death toll from the February earthquakes in Turkey. About this he said in an interview with the Spanish edition of La Razon.

“I can’t give you a figure (of casualties), but I can assure you that the total number is less than the death toll from the earthquake in Turkey,” Reznikov said.

He also claims that Ukrainian losses are “significantly lower than those of Russia”.

On February 6, two strong earthquakes of magnitude 7.7 and 7.6 occurred in southern and southeastern Turkey, they were felt in 10 provinces of the country.

On March 20, Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) Chairman Yunus Sezer said declared that the number of victims of earthquakes reached 50,096 people.

What is known about the losses of Ukraine in the hostilities

Officially, Ukraine does not report its losses in the military conflict. However, in July 2022 Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said The Wall Street Journal that Ukraine’s daily casualties are 30 killed and 250 wounded. At the same time, according to Zelenskyy, in May and June of the same year, Ukraine lost 100-200 people killed daily.

In November, European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen said in a public video message that more than 100,000 Ukrainian soldiers had died. However, the European Commission later deleted and edited the recording of von der Leyen’s speech, arguing that the figures it presented were inaccurate.

On March 14, the Washington Post reported, quoting an unnamed senior German official, that Germany estimated Ukraine’s casualties at around 120,000 killed and wounded.

According to previously leaked secret US intelligence documents, Ukraine lost 124,500 to 131,000 people in the military conflict, of which 15,500 to 17,500 were killed, reported April 12 Reuters.
