Geneva : The World Health Organization (WHO) states that the global threat assessment of cholera is very high due to the increase in the number of outbreaks and their geographic spread. In a statement released here, the WHO said, “The overall capacity to respond to multiple outbreaks remains under pressure due to global resource constraints.
This includes a shortage of an oral cholera vaccine, as well as extreme pressure on public health and medical personnel who are dealing with multiple disease outbreaks and other health emergencies at the same time. WHO assesses its global risk as very high based on the current situation. The statement noted that as of March 20, cholera outbreaks have been reported in 24 countries. According to the organization, most of the countries affected by cholera outbreaks are African and West Asian countries.
