Stockholm’s entry into the alliance depends on the ratification of its candidacy by Ankara. Turkish politicians interviewed by journalists noted that after the general elections scheduled for mid-May, Ankara will not discuss this issue and that from June to September MPs will go on “vacation”. Therefore, this issue will probably not be on the agenda until early fall.
The radio reports that the bloc’s main members, including the United States and the United Kingdom, have stepped up pressure on Hungary and Turkey to ratify Sweden’s bid. This happened after Finland became an official member of NATO.
Sweden decided to apply to join the alliance in mid-May last year. Only Ankara and Budapest have not ratified his candidacy.
