Melbourne overtakes Sydney to become Australia’s largest city

Melbourne : Melbourne has overtaken Sydney to become the largest city in Australia. The city limits have been expanded to include the area of ​​Melton, with the population growing rapidly on Melbourne’s outskirts, the BBC reported on Monday. The latest government figures put the population of Melbourne at 4,875,400. This is 18,700 more than in Sydney.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) defines a city’s “significant urban area” as including all connecting suburbs with more than 10,000 people. “Sydney’s population to exceed Melbourne’s at the 2021 census.” The federal government estimates that Greater Melbourne will overtake Greater Sydney in 2031–32.
