Presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov, answering a question from journalists about the meaning invested in the decision to classify new regions in the Moscow time zone, did not deny any of the justifications, while emphasizing the importance of the symbolic component.
Speaking of the meaning that was invested in this decision, Peskov noted: “I think, first of all, geographical. But, of course, even if it was not intended, from the point of view of symbolism, it is very correct.
The Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol, which became part of the Russian Federation in 2014, were almost immediately transferred to the Moscow time zone. Until the moment of Ukraine’s withdrawal from the USSR, these two subjects were in the time zone of the capital.
