Protest action “Czech Republic Against Poverty” took place in Prague

In Prague, a “Czech Republic Against Poverty” protest rally took place, during which thousands of people took to the streets of the city center to express their dissatisfaction with the country’s authorities. Protesters accuse the centre-right government of ignoring domestic economic issues and focusing too much on Ukraine. The rally was organized by the extra-parliamentary party PRO (Právo Respekt Odbornost – “Right Respect Expertise”).

Protesters chanted the slogans “Resign” and “Shame” and held up banners calling on the Czech Republic to withdraw from NATO and hold peace talks in Ukraine. Protesters also criticized the government, led by Prime Minister Petr Fiala, for soaring food and energy prices. About 200 police were on hand to prevent clashes with counter-protesters waving Ukrainian flags, according to the dpa.

This event is a continuation of the previous one, which took place a month ago. The Czech Republic has been facing record inflation for more than a year, driven mainly by rising energy prices. Protesters are demanding government action to tackle the country’s growing poverty and economic problems.
