The European Commission has condemned the decision of Poland and Hungary to ban the import of Ukrainian cereals and other agricultural products. The representative of the European Commission said that unilateral actions by EU Member States in the field of trade are unacceptable, as trade policy is entirely within the competence of EU authorities. The European Commission has also stressed the need for coordination and harmonization of decisions within the EU, especially in difficult times.
Poland and Hungary have announced an import ban on grain and other food products from Ukraine to protect local agricultural sectors.
Poland explains its decision as a crisis that threatens its agricultural sector due to the influx of cheaper Ukrainian products. Hungary, in turn, has temporarily banned the import of grains, oilseeds and some other agricultural products from Ukraine. Both countries expect the EU to reconsider the temporary removal of duties on Ukrainian products until June 30 and ensure fair market conditions for European agriculture.
