In New York, the musical The Phantom of the Opera stopped playing on Broadway 35 years after its premiere. On this subject informed Associated Press.

The last performance of the Phantom of the Opera took place on the stage of the Majestic Theatre. At the end of the performance, artists from the current and previous casts, including Sarah Brightman, performed the song “Music of the Night” from the musical.

The writer of the musical, composer Andrew Lloyd Webber took the stage in a black suit and black tie. He dedicated the final performance to his son Nick, who died in March after a long battle with stomach cancer and pneumonia. He was 43 years old.

The audience gave the musical a standing ovation. At the same time, producer Cameron Mackintosh clarified that The Phantom of the Opera could return to the stage.

“The only question I get asked over and over again is will The Ghost be back? Having been a producer for over 55 years, I’ve seen all the great musicals come back, and Ghost is one of bigger. So it’s only a matter of time,” McIntosh said.

Broadway theaters have been hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic, according to the Associated Press. They’ve been closed for 18 months, their costs have gone up. The profitability of productions, and in the first place of the Phantom of the Opera, depends on tourists. However, so far the tourist flow to New York has not returned to the pre-pandemic era.

The Phantom of the Opera premiered on Broadway on January 26, 1988. The musical became the longest-running Broadway show. The Phantom of the Opera was first staged in London in 1986. In total, it has been performed over 70,000 times in 17 languages in 183 cities around the world. The show was watched by over 145 million viewers. The Phantom of the Opera grossed $1.3 billion on Broadway.

After the Phantom of the Opera closed, Chicago became Broadway’s longest-running musical. Its premiere was in 1996. In second place is The Lion King, which has been on stage since 1997.
