Today, the United Nations World Food Program announced the temporary suspension of its activities in Sudan due to developments in the security situation. Cindy McCain, Executive Director of the World Food Program, said in a statement: "We are forced to pause all WFP operations in Sudan while we review the evolution of the security situation". McCain affirmed WFP’s commitment to helping the Sudanese people, who face food insecurity, but will not be able to carry out their life-saving work without ensuring the safety and security of its teams and partners. She added: "All parties must reach an agreement that ensures the safety of humanitarian workers on the ground, and allows for the continued delivery of life-saving humanitarian assistance to the people of Sudan, which remains our top priority.". The Executive Director of the program expressed her dissatisfaction after the killing of 3 employees of the Food Program and the injury of two others in the clashes that erupted in northern Darfur, yesterday, Saturday, while they were carrying out their duties. The developments in the situation in Sudan sparked widespread Arab and international concern, amid calls for calm and restraint, as the United Nations, the Arab League, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, the United States, Russia and the European Union called for an end to the fighting in the country.
